🔒 This Week’s Focus: Personal Devices Are Your Biggest Blind Spot

Employees love using their own phones, tablets, and laptops — but attackers love that even more.

Across Texas (and especially in Bexar County), breaches increasingly start from personal devices:

  • Unpatched iPhones or Androids

  • Laptops without antivirus or Defender

  • Weak or reused passwords

  • Text-message phishing (smishing)

  • Unauthorized personal apps connecting to company systems

Quick Fix:
Require MFA, enforce device updates, and set a baseline security policy for all devices accessing company email or data.

📊 Local Threat Snapshot: What’s Hitting SA Right Now

1. Email Spoofing Attacks on Medical & Dental Offices

Attackers impersonate clinics to request payments, insurance information, or PHI record transfers.

2. Invoice Fraud Targeting Construction & Real Estate

Fake ACH “update” requests are being sent to office managers and bookkeepers across SA.

3. Ransomware Hitting Nonprofits & Churches

Low staffing and outdated systems make easy victims — several cases have been reported in Central and South Texas this quarter.

📱 Device Security Tip of the Week

Fully Turn Off Bluetooth When You're Not Using It

On iPhones, toggling Bluetooth off from Control Center (swiping down) does not fully disable Bluetooth.
Your device can remain partially discoverable and vulnerable to nearby attackers.

To completely shut it off (and protect against unauthorized connections):

👉 Go to Settings → Bluetooth → Turn Off

This is especially important in crowded public areas around San Antonio, including:

  • The Pearl

  • North Star Mall

  • Downtown coffee shops and coworking spaces

Fully turning Bluetooth off closes multiple wireless attack paths — one of the most overlooked risks.

🛠 Quick Wins You Can Implement Today

  • Enable automatic updates on all devices (work and personal)

  • Require strong passcodes (no 4-digit PINs)

  • Install Microsoft Defender or reputable mobile security app

  • Remove unused or unknown apps

  • Never click links in unexpected text messages or WhatsApp threads

Small habits prevent major breaches.
